You are good to me

You are good to me

As long as you are proud you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on thing and people: and, of course, as long as you are looking down you cannot see something that is above you.
— C.S. Lewis

Brothers & Sisters,

I think of the people in my life and how good they continue to be to me. I can only hope that I return that gift in some way, shape, or form for you. Know that you are always in my prayers and I wish you success in whatever you do and am always there to help brush you off when you fall.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about peace and humility. One such moment of humility that I’ve been pondering is a story about Saint Thomas Aquinas. When he was done writing about the eucharist he wasn’t particularly enthused with the words he had written and place the manuscript at the foot of a cross in his room. Jesus on the cross spoke to him and said “you’ve written well of me Thomas, what is it that you would have from me?” Saint Thomas replied with “nothing but you Lord, nothing but you.” This story has stuck with me for the past year and I doubt it’s one I’ll ever forget. What a perfect example of humility! Here’s Jesus in front of you offering you anything and the response is a simple yet beautiful one. Nothing but you.

That story really makes me think about excess and how it surrounds most people and it really isn’t needed. It’s made me rethink a lot about my life. The material things I used to cling to, I find myself not caring about as much anymore. I can’t take them with me, and they aren’t going to help get me to heaven or help others so are they really necessary?

The reality is all I need in my life are my family, friends, and my faith. You are good to me.

Yours,
Jeff
